Coopbank Launches Coopay e-Birr Electricity Bill Payment Service
Coopbank, in partnership with the Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), officially launched the Coopay e-birr Electricity Payment Service today at Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa. This new service enables public to conveniently pay their electricity bills anytime and anywhere, including weekends and public holidays. The launch event was attended by top executives from both institutions.
With this partnership, the public including Coopbank’s more than 15.5 million customers now have the ability to pay their electricity bills through the Coopay e-birr app. For customers without smartphones, Coopbank has made the service accessible through its USSD code by dialing *841# and through a nationwide network of over 35,000 authorized agents. As a pioneering platform in Ethiopia’s private banking sector, the Coopay e-birr app has already processed over 3 trillion birr and served more than 17 million users.
During the launch event, Coopbank CEO, Obbo Deribie Asfaw, highlighted that this new service is part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to digital innovation. He shared, “The introduction of this service is a reflection of our broader vision to lead Ethiopia into a new era of digital and advanced banking. We are transforming how people interact with financial services by making them simple, fast, and reliable.”
Obbo Deribie further emphasized that with the addition of the e-Birr electricity bill payment feature, Coopay e-birr continues to expand its reach, simplifying daily life for millions of Ethiopians. The app now supports over 30 diverse government and non-government services, including payments for Ethiopian Airlines, Municipal Services, Water Utilities, Ethio Telecom, Federal Housing Corporation, and various private institutions such as schools and healthcare providers.
Engineer Getu Geremew, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Utility, also praised the collaboration, stating, “This partnership aligns with our government’s digital transformation agenda. By integrating digital payments, we will enhance operational efficiency, improve customer satisfaction, and make service delivery more accessible to all.”
The agreement was formally signed by Coopbank President Obbo Deribie Asfaw and EEU CEO Engineer Getu Geremew, marking the official launch of the service. This partnership underscores the strong commitment of both institutions to delivering impactful, technology-driven public services.
With this new service, customers can now pay their electricity bills anytime, anywhere, without restrictions on time or location, even during public holidays or power outages. This advancement takes Ethiopia one step closer to a cashless, digitally empowered economy.
